A summer cyclone, named Fani, hit eastern India on May 3rd with an estimate of 64 related deaths. Based on how strong the cyclone, it is notable that there were not even more deaths. Part of this feat seems to be due to the accuracy of the meteorological department’s warnings; 1.2 million people were evacuated less than 2 days before the cyclone. There are a few important lessons to learn from their response efforts including their relief infrastructure, warning systems, communication systems, and the coordination of response teams.
