For patients with compromised immune systems, a new fungal infection posses a serious health threat. Candida auris, the fungal disease, is a type of yeast and spreads quickly as it is highly contagious and has shown drug resistance. The fungi has spread across at least 30 countries and is primarily a worry for those staying in a hospital or other health care facility. There have been estimates made that the infection is fatal in 30 to 60 percent of patients. Researchers in the United States and Netherlands propose that global warming plays a role in its recent spread, as seen in a study from the journal of the American Society of Microbiology. Many fungal infections do not occur in humans, however, their theory suggests that with the gradual warming of the planet, the organism has been able to adapt and survive at temperatures similar to that of the human body.
