Researchers at Google and Northwestern University along with three British medical institutions have developed an artificial intelligence model that predicts breast cancer in mammograms more accurately than human experts. A study on this AI model reported that the AI detected cases of breast cancer higher than radiologists and fewer false positives. Trying to identify breast cancer form a mammogram can be challenging: the radiologist has to distinguish cloudy and nefarious masses from healthy tissue by looking solely at a black and white photo. Despite being well trained, clinicians still fail to identify around 20% of all breast cancers and report false positives to nearly 50% of the women who get mammograms. The use of AI may never completely replace human experts, but it is a helpful tool that can provide a second opinion. For the full article, click here.
