Parts of Southland shaken by a 4.9 earthquake on a dangerous fault near Anza

A 4.9 earthquake struck Friday evening at 6:53 PM near Anza in Riverside County in Southern California. The quake was felt strongly in San Diego County, and even felt in downtown Los Angeles and other areas of LA County and the Inland Empire. The quake erupted along the San Jacinto fault system, which scientists say is capable of producing a quake of 7.3 to 7.5. The last time a 7.3 earthquake occurred was on November 22, 1800, producing 13 feet of lateral displacement near Anza. Although the return time is variable, a San Diego State University scientists said that the average return time for a big earthquake in that area is 270 years.
