NBC: Police Issue ‘Virtual Kidnap’ Alerts to California Schools

There have been two “virtual kidnapping” cases in Laguna Beach. Virtual in the sense that the families of the alleged victim were contacted via telephone and told to wire a bank account in Mexico thousands of dollars or else their daughters would be harmed. However, the women were not in any harm at all, but one parent wired $5,000 before he received the call from his daughter that she she was fine. Neither girl was actually kidnapped, however, authorities are alerting parents throughout Laguna Beach to watch out for these calls. The FBI is also working on the case.
