Breathing in Delhi air equivalent to smoking 44 cigarettes a day

Air quality readings in Delhi have reached 1000 marks on the US embassy air quality index. With the World Health Organization considering anything over 25 marks to be unsafe, Delhi has reached frightening levels of heavy pollution. In recent days, doctors have noticed an influx of patients complaining of chest pain, difficulty breathing, and burning eyes. Breathing air quality this poor has similar effects to smoking roughly 44 cigarettes a day.
