Hackers Targeting 911 Centers Across the Country

Last week, Baltimore’s 911 center experienced an attempted ransomware attack when its dispatch system was hacked, resulting in a temporary shutdown of city’s computer aided dispatch, CAD, system for 17 hours. According to data compiled by the cyber security firm SecuLore, over the last two years, there were 184 cyber attacks targeted at government and public agencies in the US, with 42 of those attacks specifically targeting city 911 call centers across the country. Most of the 911 attacks were ransomware attacks, which is when hackers utilize malicious software in order to block or restrict access until a ransom is paid.
