WHO Reports Rapid Spread of Malaria in Venezuela

In the beginning of the year, 5,000 Venezuelans were reportedly fleeing Venezuela daily due to the social and economic crisis occurring in the country (Meridith Kohut-The New York Times)

Venezuela saw the largest increase of malaria cases worldwide during the 2017 year. There were 406,000 cases of malaria reported that year, an increase of around 70% in the country. With the mass exodus of Venezuelans into neighboring countries, especially Brazil, as a result of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, there is fear of further spread and increase of the disease in the region.
