Early this month an Ebola outbreak was reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo causing a very high public health risk. In the previous 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak, over 11,300 deaths were reported and over 28,600 infections. However, now there is significantly more preparation and tools available to prevent such a dramatic escalation in mortality and infection including vaccinations. The rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine is given to individuals that are at risk of contracting Ebola such as healthcare workers and those in high-risk regions. Ring vaccination is being employed. Additionally, there are experimental drugs available to the Congo’s Ministry of Health to treat infected patients if need be. To read more about the outbreak, click here.
