Scientific American: Study Ties Autism to Maternal Blood Pressure, Diabetes

Two new studies suggest a link between maternal diabetes or high blood pressure and Autism prevalence in children born to mothers with these traits. Previously, there was thought to be a link with type two and gestational diabetes, however, the new study suggests a link between maternal type one diabetes and child autism. The prevalence of Autism in children born to mothers with type one diabetes is twice that of a woman without this condition. The second study suggests that mothers with Preeclampsia have a fifty percent increased chance of baring children with Autism. It has been speculated that genetics may be the cause of this association.
