ABC: Congo Ebola outbreak kills 44 as aid workers struggle to contain spread in conflict zone

As of Friday, August 17, 2018, the World Health Organization announced that 44 people have died and 78 people have been infected in the Congo’s tenth Ebola outbreak This outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been particularly challenging due to an active conflict where armed groups regularly kill and kidnap civilians. According to Michelle Gayer, director of emergency health for the International Rescue Committee (IRC) the response to contain this outbreak will likely be extended and longer than anticipated.
