CNN: Household Disinfectants Could Be Making Kids Overweight, Study Says

A new Canadian study suggests that there may be a link between the use of disinfectant cleaning products and children becoming overweight. Those infants found to be in homes where disinfectant sprays were used weekly were twice as likely to have a specific bacteria in their gut, and were more likely to have a higher BMI. In light of this finding, there has been a call for further, more in depth research as children’s diets and other characteristics were not controlled for. Disinfectants play an important role in controlling the spread of disease and it should be noted that there has not been direct causation established between its use and the prevalence of overweight children.
