Children Under 10 Have Contracted a Rare ‘Polio-Like’ Illness

A rare ‘Polio-Like’ illness, named acute flaccid myelitis, has been surfacing since 2014. However, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), rates of this illness have been skyrocketing over the past few weeks. Acute flaccid myelitis affects the nervous system, especially the spinal cord. Although rare, this disease can be deadly. Majority of patients affected are children less than 10 years of age, with 362 cases of the illness thus far. Although the CDC recommends precautions to prevent obtaining the disease, there is currently no vaccination against the illness.
