The Verge: California’s earthquake warning app: how it works and what comes next

904

On October 17th, the 30th anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake,  California Governor Gavin Newsom introduces the launch of the first statewide earthquake early warning app, MyShake. Like ShakeAlertLA, a Los Angeles-exclusive app, MyShake gathers information from a network of seismic sensors under the United State’s Geological Survey (USGS). The sensors detect primary waves that are unnoticeable to the average person. Then they forward data to the app to alert users within a minute, ideally before the dangerous secondary waves hit. As with most new apps, MyShake has many improvements it is working on both within and beyond the app to better accommodate the greater population.

The free MyShake app can be found on the Google Play Store for Android users and the Apple App Store for iOS users. For more information, read the full article here.
