NPR: CDC Hospital Data Point To Racial Disparity In COVID-19 Cases

A CDC study released demographic information of hospitalized COVID-19 patients from 14 states in the month of March. It found that African Americans make up 33% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients despite making up only 13% of the U.S. population. This study highlights not only the racial disparities in the healthcare system but also that almost 90% of hospitalized patients had one or more underlying conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health suggests that African Americans are more likely to have existing conditions that increase their likelihood of ICU admission.
