The Guardian: “Hopes rise for end of pandemic as Pfizer says vaccine is 90% effective”

Amongst some devastating COVID-19 related news this past week—including record daily cases and 1,000+ daily coronavirus-related deaths in the U.S.—there is hope for an end to the pandemic. Pfizer and BioNTech have been developing a vaccine and conducting Phase 3 clinical trials in hopes of delivering an effective vaccine by the end of this year. For vaccines to be approved by the Food & Drug Administration, they must be at least 50-60% effective, but the latest interim analysis of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine suggested 90% efficacy. Manufacturing of the vaccine has already begun, with plans to supply more than 1 billion doses globally. It is important, however, to understand that it will take a while for the pandemic to be truly over and that the news of the vaccine’s efficacy is a signal of hope for a return to “normalcy.” To read the full article, click here.
