CNN: Multiple sclerosis drug helps coronavirus patients recover, Phase 2 trial suggests

British researchers from a biotechnology company, Synairgen, have completed a Phase 2 trial with interferon beta-1a that is typically used to decrease inflammation and reduce multiple sclerosis. The drug was administered to 48 patients using a nebulizer and after 2 weeks, patients who had received daily treatment were likely to get better by day 15 than those who received placebo. The study comes with limitations but opens the door to a potentially effective course of treatment. According to Dr. Jay Finigan, pulmonologists and director of the Respiratory Centres of Excellence in Denver, there is an urgent need to look closely at different types of inhaled drugs that could potentially deliver mortality benefits.
