On Tuesday, October 5, Johnson & Johnson had submitted data to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization of a booster shot of its Covid-19 vaccine in people ages 18 years and older. According to CDC, an estimated 15 million Americans have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine. According to the vaccine manufacturers, the second shot of the vaccine given about two months after the first increased its effectiveness to 94 percent compared to the initial protection of 70 percent. Unfortunately, there is a risk of hundreds of thousands of unused Johnson & Johnson vaccines expiring. As of now, it is unclear how many of these doses are going to be wasted, but it is evident that the 22 million doses that were shipped across the United States were not all used. The FDA has already authorized a booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine. It is anticipated that the FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee panel will hold a meeting on Oct. 14 to discuss the additional dose of the Moderna vaccine.
