The new variants are distant relatives of the Omicron strands, and one variant in particular has become fairly widespread in the United States. Studies have suggested that the COVID-19 vaccines may not be very effective in protecting against these new variants, but certain measures such as masking and staying home when feeling sick can help prevent the spread.
