While the surface level devastation wrought by hurricanes Maria and Irma warranted global attention, these hurricanes also highlighted and exacerbated Puerto Rico’s long-standing economic crisis. This article highlights six primary reasons for Puerto Rico’s economic crisis ranging from population migration to a job crisis. Puerto Rico’s financial crisis leads to questions of how they are expected to rebuild a society that was already financially flawed to begin with.
