African swine fever is spreading quickly throughout Asia and Europe, causing American hog farmers to increase their safety procedures to try and keep this disease out. U.S. officials are currently in the process of devising new ways to test for the disease. African swine fever can cause death for hogs due to hemorrhaging in skin and organs. Although not harmful to humans, it can still be transmitted to humans in numerous ways, and there is currently no vaccine for the disease. The US Department of Agriculture stressed the fact that this disease has the potential to have an enormous negative economic impact on the United States’ $6.5 billion markets for pork.
