Researchers from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health found that Los Angeles neighborhoods with poor air quality had the highest rates of COVID-19 mortality, specifically a 60% increase in deaths. These neighborhoods house communities of people of color and low-income individuals. The research focused on nitrogen dioxide which is a compound found predominantly in traffic-related pollution and is associated with many conditions including lung cancer, pulmonary diseases, and increased risk of respiratory diseases.
