CNN: ‘Internet of things’ or ‘vulnerability of everything’? Japan will hack its own citizens to find out

Starting on February 20th, the Japanese government will begin hacking 200 million poorly secured IOT devices and alerting its citizens about the possible threats their devices are under. Increasingly popular IOT devices make up the “internet of things”, which include devices from webcams to wifi-enabled bird feeders that can be accessed from anywhere on the Internet. Many of these devices are highly vulnerable to cybersecurity threats, as shown by leaked webcam footages of unknowing people in their homes, and most companies are not being held accountable under current liability laws.
