Taiwan Calls Offs Search for Earthquake Victims

Rescuers called off the search on Sunday for the last pair of individuals still reported missing due to Taiwan’s most recent devastating earthquake, after one individual’s body was found on Sunday morning. Including the missing pair, the death toll for the 6.4 earthquake that hit Hualien, which is one of country’s most popular tourist locations, has now risen to 17 total. Most of the casualties were tourists, with most of the deaths, 14 of the 17 reported, occurring due to the partial collapse of the Yunmen Tsuiti Building. After Taiwan’s deadly earthquake in 1999, stricter building requirements were enforced for buildings. However, many older buildings not built to the same requirements are still susceptible to earthquakes in the country
