In general, infection rates of malaria have dropped over 60% since 2000. However, in 2016, for the first time in ten years, the number of cases of malaria in the world increased, from 211 million to 216 million. The recent rising trend of cases is causing worry that the disease is resurging, in a large part due to drug resistance. About half the worlds population is at risk of malaria. As a result, at the recent Malaria Summit in London, 2018, Bill Gates pledged $1billion through the Gates Foundation to help fight against the disease and voiced his thoughts on malaria.
