The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, is very similar to other coronaviruses that caused epidemics like SARS and MERS. COVID-19 actually shares about 79% similarity with SARS and 50% similarity with MERS so information about those two viruses could help us learn more about COVID-19. Many respiratory viruses like the flu are more prevalent in the winter when temperatures and colder and drier. This is because viruses can survive and reproduce better at cooler temperatures. Studies show that SARS became inactivated as temperatures increased. This means the novel coronavirus could settle down in late spring, but nothing is known for certain.
