Type 2 diabetes affects one in ten Americans adults, which is approximately 30 million people. With this form of diabetes, the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin present. This causes the blood sugar to be too high. Having Type 2 diabetes increases your risk for heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage if it is poorly managed. However, people can live long and heathy lives; most newly diagnosed diabetics will never have to take medication if they make appropriate lifestyle modifications in terms of diet and exercising. There are several fallacies surrounding Type 2 diabetes. For example, these individuals can have two to three servings of fruit per day, even though this is commonly thought to be untrue. Additionally, type 2 diabetics should not only pay attention to carbohydrates and be forced to follow a low carb diet. Both a high and low carb diet have been shown to be acceptable for these populations, and it is important that protein and fat intake are considered in addition to carbohydrates.
