Science: Blood abnormalities found in people with Long Covid
A new large scale study on long COVID-19 has found there to be blood abnormalities associated with the infection. Researchers believe long Covid shares many similarities with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome which has been shown to follow after infections. The study looked at 99 subjects with long Covid and found the T cell antibody response was still active which means their immune system was fighting perhaps a reservoir of SARS-CoV-2 or a reactivated pathogen. The patients struggled with intense fatigue, brain fog, and some had low levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that helps the body control inflammation, glucose, sleep cycles, and more. Around 20% to 30% of patients had exhausted T cells in their blood meaning their bodies are constantly fighting something. The full article by Jennifer Couzin-Frankel can be read here on Science.
