Turkey-Syria quake live briefing: Turkish authorities detain suspects, plan investigation units
Since 1939, this has been Turkey’s most powerful earthquake disaster and its deadliest since 1999. The death toll has exceeded 25,00, and in northwestern Syria, rescue efforts are ending. Criticism has been directed towards the international community for not providing enough aid or equipment to the region ravaged by war. Armenia has also sent aid trucks to deliver humanitarian aid. Plans have been made to restore gas and electricity, while the US military is also deploying forces to help with earthquake relief in Turkey. As for other external aid, the head of the World Health Organization is visiting Syria to support health-care efforts. The plane also carries the necessary emergency supplies, as pneumonia is likely to rise in the next few days due to the cold of temporary shelters.
