An experimental spinal cord implant has enabled Marc Gauthier, a 63-year-old man with advanced Parkinson’s disease, to walk more steadily and without frequent falls. The implant uses electrical stimulation to target specific areas of the spinal cord that control leg movements, significantly reducing symptoms such as freezing of gait. This neuroprosthesis has provided new hope for addressing severe walking impairments that were unresponsive to traditional therapies like medication and deep brain stimulation.
