Researchers state that the unchecked safety and sanitary conditions in US immigration detention centers have led to the spread of infectious diseases within these centers. According to the University of Maryland School of Medicine, seven migrant children have died in US custody due to pneumonia, sepsis, influenza and a misdiagnosed sinus infection. Also, in the months of September and October 2019, outbreaks of the flu, mumps, and chicken pox have led to quarantines in detention centers.
