Science Daily: Mosquito Nets-Are they catching more fishes than insects?

While mosquito nets were originally created to help curtail the effects of malaria by repelling mosquitoes, recent studies have seen that communities living in poverty and food insecurity have been using them for fishing instead. However, because most mosquito net fishers are only able to catch the smaller fish lurking along the coastline, these practices end up removing a huge number of juvenile fish which can lead to a loss of ecosystem function, greater poverty, and eventually even less food availability as these baby fish are unable to grow and reproduce.
