Officials have concluded that a tiny amount of Cesium-137 could affect over 10 square miles. However, despite Cesium’s availability in hospitals and laboratories and its widespread use, government officials have not taken many measures to safely regulate its manufacture and use. However, devices that use Cesium, such as irradiators and other capsules, are prone to leaks or accidental releases, which can cause harm to others and ultimately lead to the shut down of important facilities.
