Sewage Surveillance’s Role In Early Detection Of Disease Outbreaks

Wastewater testing was first introduced at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, in March 2020. Efforts expanded throughout the pandemic once officials realized that cases could be detected much more quickly through wastewater surveillance than regular testing. With the emergence of the monkeypox outbreak and more recently the polio outbreak, scientists are hoping to expand their wastewater testing to include more viruses.
