NPR: Moderna’s COVID vaccine gambit: Hike the price, offer free doses for uninsured
Moderna plans to charge around $130 per dose for its next version of the vaccine tailored to target new strains of the virus. This cost will be passed on to individual patients if their health insurance does not cover it, prompting outrage from some politicians. The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions has called Moderna’s CEO in for questioning about the pricing plan. However, Moderna has announced a patient assistance program that will provide the vaccine to uninsured or underinsured patients at no cost, beginning in May. The price increase for Moderna’s vaccine comes as Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson also plan to charge similar commercial prices for their COVID-19 vaccines. The full article by Sydney Lupkin can be read here on NPR.
