Australia is currently dealing with a mysterious outbreak of Buruli ulcer, an infectious, flesh-eating disease that affects the skin and sometimes the bone of the individual. Over the last few years, Australia has seen an increase in cases of Buruli ulcer, especially in Victoria. Australia has reported increasing number of cases since 2013. In 2016, there was an increase in cases by 72%, and another increase in cases by 51% in the following year. Buruli ulcer is commonly found primarily in African regions, but cases in Australia have been reported since 1948. It is only recently that case numbers have increased in such a large amount, which has officials concerned, especially since the cause of the outbreak still remains unknown.
