JEMS: Leveraging Volunteers During Emergent Events

When mass casualty incidents unfold, the first trained unit that responds is tasked with dozens of responsibilities until additional resources arrive. New studies have looked at using volunteers who in times of need, seem to set up and assist trained professionals. A team from the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI) at Harvard University has studied volunteer involvement in MCIs extensively and found that trained responders that utilize volunteers for these incidents can shift patient outcomes to be more favorable.
