San Francisco may become the first city in the United States to ban the use of facial recognition technology by police and city agencies. Supporters believe that the proposed legislation will be a step forward in protecting people’s civil rights and prevent an Orwellian future where people could possibly be placed in virtual identity databases used by the police without their knowledge. One of the main purposes of the ban is to address the inaccuracies of the technology particularly in identifying minorities for law enforcement purposes. Currently, it is unclear on how the city has been using facial recognition technology.
