Gizmodo: Google Researchers Trained an Algorithm To Detect Lung Cancer Better Than Radiologists

1,057

Google AI researchers and healthcare researchers released a journal article stating that they developed an algorithm that detects lung cancer in people at a 94.4% success rate. The process for developing the deep learning algorithm is compared to a student in school, in which the algorithm learns what lung cancer is, trains through large data sets, and is finally given a final exam on data it has never seen before in order to prove its effectiveness in detection. This new algorithm, although early in its development and often flawed, gives hope to improve future lung cancer screenings. Learn more about it here.
