However, Zika is still thriving in Brazil and UCLA Pediatric Infectious Disease Doctor, Dr. Karin Neilson, speculates that the outbreak in Brazil is more dangerous now because of the lack of media exposure. This specific strain has been identified to cause birth defects in Asia. The female Aedes mosquito carries this strain. Areas that are densely populated and are home to these mosquitoes pose the highest risk for acquisition.
