Scientific American: Vaping-Related Lung Injuries Resemble Chemical Burns

A study of 17 patients with vaping-related illnesses appear to have airway and lung damage that resembles those found after chemical spills or contact with harmful gases. While they have yet to identify what chemical causes this burn-like damage, they have identified that the previous hypothesis identifying lipid inhalation as damaging is unlikely. According to federal data recently released, there have been more than 800 confirmed cases with at least a dozen deaths linked to the illness. From a sample of 17 patients who gave biopsies, 70% reported vaping marijuana and in all cases researchers found signs of pneumonia.
