The Global Health Security Index (GHSI) assesses the level of unpreparedness among countries for a disease epidemic or pandemic. The GHSI was created by the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, the Nuclear Threat Initiative, and The Economist Intelligence Unit as a collaborative research project to assess the health security of 195 countries. The index has a range from 0-100 with zero meaning that a country is not prepared at all and a score of 100 meaning that a country is fully prepared for a disease epidemic or pandemic. The average score among countries was 40 and the average score among the sixty highest earning countries was 52. The index score was based on weaknesses that a country currently has in identifying, preventing, and responding to an epidemic or pandemic. For more information on the GHSI click here.
