Scientific American: Possible Carcinogen Found in a Common Heartburn Medication Is Present in Some Foods

Ranitidine, the generic version of Zantac, has been recalled because it may contain low levels of a probable carcinogen, NDMA. Zantac/Ranitidine is used to treat acid reflux and stomach ulcers.The FDA found NMDA levels in Ranitidine to be similar to those found in smoked foods, beer, water, and cheese, however, they are still investigating. NDMA is known to cause cancer in animals; chronic low dosages have lead to the development of tumors on the liver and esophagus in rats. The FDA is not currently suggesting that people stop taking the drug, however, if patients would like to refrain, they should consult their doctor.
