The Sacramento Bee: California Sues Vaping Powerhouse JUUL, Alleging it Caused a ‘Public Health Epidemic’

According to the attorney’s general office, since Juul’s launch in 2015, youth vaping has doubled across the United States. A report states that e-cigarette use has risen 135% from 2017 to 2019 and sales directly from Juul account for 64% of the e-cigarette sales market. California is now taking Juul Labs to court on the basis that the company has been unlawfully targeting minors and is responsible for a public health epidemic. The suit claims that Juul delivered products without age verification and emailed minors with marketing material even though they did not pass the age verification. Juul Labs has responded to the suit by stating that they want to focus on earning the trust of society and are taking steps to discourage youths. They are funding research, halting advertising in the U.S. and suspending the sales of the most popular flavor.
