Los Angeles Daily News: Vouchers in hand, some homeless in the Sepulveda Basin are displaced with apartments almost in reach

The LA Sanitation clean-up of homeless encampments in the Sepulveda Basin prompted many residents to scramble in search of new temporary settlements as their encampments were quickly demolished. However, some evacuees have hope that they can finally settle into a permanent residence after waiting up to ten years for Section 8 vouchers. The federal government distributes Section 8 vouchers to help extremely low-income households find housing with a private landlord at a subsidized rate. Prior to last year, it has been found that most landlords refused to accept Section 8 vouchers which resulted in the passage of a city ordinance that bans such discrimination. Nonetheless, many homeless families with Section 8 vouchers are experiencing time-consuming bureaucratic move-in processes, prolonging their time in the streets. Learn more about the issue here.
