There are rising concerns as to how long the novel coronavirus can survive on a surface – so much so that China’s central bank is thoroughly disinfecting their cash, and even destroying it, to minimize the contamination. It is unknown how long the novel coronavirus can linger on a surface, but researchers are comparing the virus to other coronaviruses to find clues. Previous human coronaviruses such as SARS and MERS were found to be able to survive on inanimate objects for as long as nine days. Cleaning with household cleaning products can make a large difference. A contaminated surface can be efficiently disinfected by “surface disinfection procedures with 62-71% ethanol, 0.5% hydrogen peroxide or 0.1% sodium hypochlorite or bleach within one minute.” For the full article, click here.
