SA: The Poor and Marginalized Will Be the Hardest Hit by Coronavirus

Thus far, COVID-19 has seen over 111,000 confirmed cases and over 3,800 deaths internationally. In times of panic and pandemic, it is essential that we support our public health officials. However, our current systems focus less on investment in preparedness and more on acting at the time of challenge. These systems are not being given adequate support from the current administration, who has cut funding for global health initiatives and disease security programs that would have better positioned us against the current outbreak. Trump has now signed multi-billion dollar spending bills for fighting the spread of disease, however, it would have been more effective if put towards prevention. Further, support is not being given to marginalized populations such as the elderly and people with pre-existing disease. The CDC has reported that people with heart disease are at a heightened risk of COVID-19 complications.
