NBC News: Monoclonal antibodies could ease record COVID-19 hospitalizations. Why are they going unused?

Monoclonal antibodies are lab-made drugs that are meant to mimic natural antibodies to SARS-CoV-2. It is considered a recommended treatment for those who are at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19, including those over the age of 65. According to Dr. William Fales, medical director f the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services only 10 percent of COVID-19 patients who are eligible for this type of therapy receive it. The monoclonal antibody treatment can keep the hospitalization rates to a minimum however it is only efficient when given almost immediately after the person has been infected. With the apparent lack of time, resources, awareness, as well as long wait times for COVID-19 test results across the country, little to no patients have access to the therapy.
