Provincial official Kan Quancheng for China’s third most populous province, Henan, announced at a press conference that 90% of people in the province are infected with COVID-19. The Chinese government decided to abandon their zero-Covid policies in December due to pressure caused by an increase in protests against lockdowns, mass testing, and quarantines. Since the lifting of these mandates China has been hitting record highs in cases. However, official numbers from the central government differ greatly from local officials. According to official data, only 120,000 people in China have been infected since the change away from zero-Covid policies. Cases are expected to rise even more this month due to Lunar New Year celebrations. The full article by Nicholas Yong can be read here on BBC. For more information on COVID-19 click here
