Because of warmer weather in the Arctic, the area’s frozen layer of soil under the ground, or permafrost, has been thawing. This permafrost, scientists state, has stored both viruses and radioactivity for thousands of years, which is why many want it to stay frozen. Although researchers state that the risk of the virus to the human population is low, it is still concerning given the fact that the Arctic is continuously warming and thawing more and more permafrost, which can reveal many unknown viruses.
